The South Bangka Regency Government, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, has carried out fogging or fumigation in residential areas in fishing villages, to prevent the spread of the dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) outbreak.
“Fogging in this fishing village is a measure to prevent the spread of dengue fever which is feared to be widespread, considering that coastal areas are very prone to outbreaks of diseases carried by mosquitoes,” said South Bangka Regent Riza Herdavid when reviewing fogging activities in the Toboali fishing village, Monday.
The Regent said that fogging is the first step to prevent the spread of dengue fever which is triggered by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
“The increase in dengue cases is very significant, namely in the past two months 47 cases have been recorded, of course this is our concern,” he said.
However, said the regent, fogging is only an emergency measure, and the most important thing is that the community must also do the 3 M’s plus, namely, burying used goods, draining water reservoirs and burying used goods.

“Residents must also avoid mosquito bites by sleeping using mosquito nets and turning on mosquito repellent while sleeping or using anti-mosquito medication,” he said.
Head of the South Bangka Health and Population Control Service (DKPP), Dr. Agus Pranawa, said that currently, based on data, 47 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in his area.
“The most cases were in Toboali District, namely 45 cases, one case in Tukak Sadai District, and one case in Airgegas District,” he said.
His party is taking anticipatory steps by sensitizing the public to implement 3 M plus, because fogging is done too often and the mosquitoes will become immune.

Apart from that, for people who have unused storage tanks or ponds, it is better to use them as a place to keep fish which will later eat mosquito larvae.
Fogging is only the first step, because it only kills mosquitoes but not the mosquito larvae. In fact, by implementing 3 M plus, it is an effective step for society.
“From now on, we urge people to frequently clean gutters, used items, and also try to use mosquito nets when sleeping,” he said.
