“South American Trump” Wins Presidential Election After Coming from Third Place: Javier Millay’s Controversial Rise to Power in Argentina

“South American Trump” became president after coming from third place

Argentina’s presidential election (run-off) held in November had a turbulent outcome, with Congressman Javier Millei, a new candidate from the radical right and liberal supremacists, winning the election. He is known by his critics as “El Loco” (the madman) and has a unique philosophy.

During the election campaign, he called for abolishing the national currency, the peso, and switching to the US dollar. In December, he caused controversy by proposing radical reform proposals, including calling for the central bank to be shut down in order to curb the soaring prices of 210% year-on-year (25% month-on-month).

On the other hand, expectations for “reform” steadily increased. He was initially seen as the third choice, but after coming in first in the August primary, he suddenly became a strong candidate. His performance in which he wields a chainsaw with his messy hair also attracted attention, and he gained support from a large group of young people.

Argentina, once called the “most prosperous country,” now has 40% of its population living in poverty, and the entire country is plunged into the darkness of economic instability. Mr. Millais has no shortage of “unique plans” to completely change the situation. In addition to cutting welfare benefits, he intends to lead Argentina to complete fiscal austerity, including closing various ministries such as culture, women, health, and education, and reducing public works projects to “zero.”

Policies that are a source of controversy are not limited to the economic field. Milley’s recommendations include loosening gun laws, banning abortion, and allowing organ sales. The new president is expected to bring about reforms, but his extreme policies are reminiscent of former American leaders, and some are calling him dangerous, calling him the “Trump of South America.” Why did the people support Mr. Millais?
