The death toll in the riots in the Republic of South Africa, provoked by the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma, is now 337, Reuters reported, citing updated data from the South African police, quoted by BTA.
Yesterday, official statistics showed that the death toll was 276.
Zuma, who has been serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court since July 7, was released today for a day from prison so he can attend his younger brother’s funeral.
Protests by supporters of the 79-year-old Zuma began after he voluntarily surrendered to police to go to prison. The demonstrations escalated into violence, arson and looting, which South African President Cyril Ramaposa described as an “uprising”. The president sent troops to help police deal with the situation.
