South African women’s and children’s rights group Women for Change does not want rapper Chris Brown to come to the country. Brown’s performances in South Africa would send the wrong message because he has a history of abusing women, the BBC reports. South Africa is among the countries with the highest levels of women and incidents of violence against women in the world.

The artist will play at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg in December. A total of 94,000 people can fit into that stadium. Due to high demand, an additional concert has already been announced.

“When I saw the news that Chris Brown was coming to South Africa, I was very surprised and disappointed,” said Sabina Walter, director of Women for Change. The group has petitioned organize against Brown. It now has about 20,000 signatures. “The petition was started to send a strong message that we do not accept the worship of people with a history of violence against women.”

Brown was controversially in the news in 2009 when it was revealed that he had abused his then-girlfriend Rihanna. Brown, who was 19 at the time, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years of probation, community service and domestic violence counseling.
