South African rapper AKA (35) shot dead | Music

South African rapper Kiernan Forbes (35), known by his stage name AKA, was shot dead in the coastal city of Durban on Friday evening. His good friend, chef and entrepreneur Tebello Motsoane, also did not survive the shooting, writes the BBC.

The two friends were outside a restaurant, probably on their way to a nightclub for a Forbes performance. They were walking to their car when they were approached by two gunmen who shot them at close range. The perpetrators then fled on foot.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, a police spokesman said BBC. The possibility that the rapper and chef are victims of liquidation cannot be ruled out.

A few hours before the fatal shooting, Forbes had announced his new album on social media. The album, Mass Countrycoming soon.

Forbes started his career as a member of the rap group Entity. He then went on to have a successful career as a solo artist. He won several awards in South Africa, was nominated several times for a Black Entertainment Television Award in the United States and won an MTV Music Award in Europe.

Fatal shootings are common in South Africa. The charity group Gun Free South Africa is committed to reducing gun violence and estimates that 30 people are killed every day in shootings in South Africa.
