South Africa decided on the 7th to temporarily stop vaccination against the novel coronavirus developed by British pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca and Oxford University.
South African Health Minister Zwelly Mkise said in December that he had identified mutant virus strains and other variants identified in Britain in December.
South Africa was planning to import 1 million doses this month for AstraZeneca’s vaccination against its medical staff.
However, researchers in the UK and South Africa put the vaccination on hold when the results of clinical trials of over 2,000 people did not meet expectations.
In this clinical trial, AstraZeneca’s vaccine was found to be 22% effective in preventing symptoms of mutant virus infections.
Minister Mkije emphasized the need for more detailed research, and decided to inoculate it with Pfizer and vaccine instead.
Meanwhile, AstraZeneca says he is confident of the effectiveness of the corona vaccine in preventing serious diseases.
