Monkeypox is endemic in some parts of Africa but not in South Africa
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JOHANNESBURG – South African (South African) Health Minister Joe Phaahla said his party had received information from the country’s laboratory service confirming the existence of a case monkey pox first in South Africa.
The patient in the case was a 30-year-old man from Johannesburg who had no travel history. “This means that this cannot be linked to transmission from outside South Africa,” said Phaahla at a press conference, Thursday (23/6/2022).
According to Phaahla, the contact tracing process has been carried out. Monkeypox is an infectious disease that causes flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. The disease is endemic in some parts of Africa but not in South Africa.
The World Health Organization (WHO) will decide on Thursday whether it will declare monkeypox a global health emergency. The move drew criticism from some of Africa’s leading scientists. The scientists say the disease has been a crisis for a number of African countries for years.
