South Africa Makes Spectacular Comeback, Defeats Defending Champions England by 229 Runs

Mumbai: South Africa, who suffered a surprise defeat against the Netherlands, made a spectacular comeback by defeating the defending champions, England. South Africa beat England by 229 runs. Batting first after losing the toss, South Africa scored 399 runs for seven wickets at the Wankhede Stadium. England’s reply ended with 170 runs in 22 overs.

Heinrich Klaasen’s (109 off 67 balls with four sixes and 12 fours) and Marko Jansson’s (75 runs off 42 balls with six sixes and three fours and two wickets) gave South Africa a huge win. Hentich Klaasen was man of the match.

At one stage, England collapsed to 100 for eight, the fight between Gus Atkinson (35 off 21 balls) and Mark Wood (unbeaten 43 off 17 balls including five sixes and two fours) helped reduce the momentum of the defeat.

Gerald Coetzee, who took three wickets in the South African line-up, led the way to destroy England. Lungi Ngidi and Jansen took two wickets each and Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj took one wicket each.

The defending champions lost opener Jonny Bairstow (10) as they started batting in search of a big target. Bairstow was dismissed by Lungi Ngidi who was caught by van der Dusen. Joe Root (two) followed, before Jansen settled to David Miller’s hands.

Jansen also returned opener David Malan (six) soon after. With that, England was 24 for 3. Ben Stokes (five), Harry Brook (17), captain Jos Buttler (15), David Willey (12) and Adil Rashid (10) also surrendered without resistance as England slumped to 100 for eight.

England won the toss and sent South Africa into bat first. Reece Topple gave hope early on by dismissing opener Quinton de Kock (four) on a wicket that was sure to see runs. But later the story changed. Opener Reesa Hendricks (85 off 75 balls including three sixes and nine fours) and Rassie van der Dusen (60 off 61 balls) put on a smashing batting partnership. Their century partnership gave South Africa a good foundation. Adil Rasheed dismissed Dozen. The next captain, Aidan Markram (42 off 44 balls) also put on a good batting tie in the middle overs. Klaasan came to the crease when Hendricks returned.

Tople dismissed David Miller (five), who is known for his explosive batting, and South Africa got a bit defensive. But later, Klaasen and Jansen, who came together at the crease, beat the English bowling line. The balls reached the gallery in a row, regardless of pace or spin. In the meantime, despite his poor fitness, Klassen completed his century.

England’s fast bowler Mark Wood was driven to the boundary by Klassen several times. Atkinson eventually fired Klaasen. The score reached 399 after Jansen smashed it in the last overs. Gerald Coetzee (three) was dismissed while Keshav Maharaj (one) remained unbeaten.

South Africa’s highest score in the World Cup against England was scored in Mumbai. South Africa scored 138 runs off the last 56 balls. Jansson’s explosive batting upset all England’s calculations. Reese Topple took three wickets and Gus Atkinson and Adil Rasheed took two wickets each for England.
