South Africa eliminated – Nigeria to the final of the African Championships

Former DIF player Mihlali Mayambela could have gone to the final of the African Championships together with his South Africa tonight.

But there was an exodus towards Nigeria after great drama.

The first semi-final of the African Championships took place earlier tonight and it was a dramatic event.

Nigeria took the lead from the penalty spot in the 67th minute.

Shortly afterwards, the former DIF player Mihlali Mayambela was replaced, but it was not he who would save South Africa during regular time.

Bafana Bafana were instead saved by VAR and Teboho Mokena.

At the end of the match, Nigeria thought they had decided the match when Victor Osimhen scored 2-0 after a counterattack, but instead of 2-0, it was a penalty for South Africa, this after a long review.

Teboho Mokena was safe from eleven meters and even during the transfer there was great drama.

Nigeria were not awarded a penalty after another VAR review in the 114th minute, however Grant Kekana was sent off.

Despite being a man down in the closing minutes, South Africa took the match to penalties.

Once there, however, Nigeria were cooler and even though Mihlali Mayambela scored his penalty, Nigeria could secure a final place after four of their penalties went on target, while South Africa missed two.

In the final, Nigeria will face either host nation Ivory Coast or DR Congo.
