South Africa Considers China as Host for BRICS Summit, Controversy Surrounds Putin’s Attendance

Sources told the publication that the South African government is considering asking China to host a meeting of heads of state or neighboring Mozambique.

A spokesman for South Africa’s foreign minister, Lunga Ngkengelele, said the current plan was for the summit to take place in the province of Gauteng, home to the commercial hub of Johannesburg and the capital, Pretoria.

“As far as we know, we have announced the venue of the summit Gauteng, South Africa. This is what we know today,” – he said.

Arrest warrant for Putin and his arrival at the summit

In March of this year, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. In this regard, the South African authorities will be required to arrest him upon arrival in the country to attend the BRICS summit.

However, South Africa initially asked Putin to attend the summit via video, but later said they were considering changing the law to give the Russian dictator so-called “immunity” so he could come.

On Monday, the South African government granted immunity delegates who are expected to attend the BRICS Ministerial Meeting in Cape Town on 1 and 2 June and the BRICS Summit from 22 to 24 August.

The South African government said participants would be granted immunity under the Diplomatic Immunities and Privileges Act. At the moment, South Africa is already preparing changes to the relevant laws and wants to introduce them into the relevant acts before the summit.
