South Africa Assures Security and Stability Ahead of 15th BRICS Summit

JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — South Africa’s law enforcement agency said on Thursday that there would be no “instability or criminality” during the 15th BRICS summit, to be held from Aug. 22-24. August in the South African city of Johannesburg.

“Security preparations for the summit are on track, with all key players ready to carry out their various responsibilities in accordance with their mandates,” Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said.

“We are ready to receive the BRICS leaders in a secure and safe environment,” added Ms. Mosikili, who is also co-chair of the National Joint Operations and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS).

With a view to preventing and combating all types of opportunistic crimes before, during and after the summit, Ms. Mosikili said that NATJOINTS would increase the visibility of the police around the summit venue.

Threats and disruptions will be dealt with decisively within the framework of the law, she said. “To this end, high-density operations will be carried out through the reinforcement of roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, visibility of foot police and aerial patrols.”

The BRICS are a group of the largest emerging economies in the world, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. END
