The president of the Spanish Association against Cancer in Asturias, Margarita Fuente, has hoped that the speed in obtaining the vaccine against COVID by the international scientific community will be a “boost” to achieve something similar in the field of cancer research.
In this sense, he pointed out that the appearance of the vaccine thanks to the union of countries, laboratories and institutions has shown that “unity is strength.” “This is what we are working on, creating a network of researchers and centers that allow greater immediacy and speed”, he highlighted.
In statements to the media in Oviedo before participating in the inauguration of the photographic exhibition ’50 years changing the history of cancer ‘, organized by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), Fuente has highlighted that the pandemic has affected the detention early cancer in many patients, “when this is key to getting ahead.”
In Asturias an average of 7,000 cases are diagnosed annually, highlighting breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. On the other hand, the colon is one of the most prevalent in both sexes.
Margarita Fuente has highlighted the need to “work in equity” so that all advances reach all patients. “At the moment it depends on the sites and many patients do not reach the treatments and advances in cancer research,” he indicated, to point out the importance of launching a national research plan in order to allow the survival rate increase.
