Sourav Ganguly Urges India to Include Yuzvendra Chahal as Leg-Spinner for 2023 ODI World Cup

Sports Desk July 2, 2023

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly says India must include a leg-spinner in the 2023 ODI World Cup squad. Ganguly suggested Yuzvendra Chahal for the position due to his consistency in ODI and T20 formats.

I feel India need to find a wrist spinner for this World Cup. Jadeja is there, Ravichandran Ashwin is there, Axar Patel is there. They are also all-rounders. (Ravi) Bishnoi and Kuldeep (Yadav) are there but (Yuzvendra) Chahal is missing big tournaments. Be it 20-over or 50-over, he has been very consistent in the shorter formats. It is important to consider him too,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly opined that fielding a wrist spinner would be very beneficial against heavyweight teams like Australia, England and South Africa. He backed up his point by citing the 2011 ODI World Cup. Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla were there with the team. Both were part of the team in 2007 T20 World Cup.

Chahal played in eight matches in the 2019 ODI World Cup. He also took 12 wickets. However, despite being included in the Indian squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup, the star did not get a chance. The player did not appear in any match of the 2022 T20 World Cup.
