The EU naval mission in the Red Sea reports that the attempt to tow the burning oil tanker “Sounion” that had been targeted by the Houthis is being abandoned.
According to the relevant announcement:
Since 1 September 2024, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES assets have taken over the protection of the tugs involved in the MV SOUNION rescue operation, with the aim of facilitating the prevention of an unprecedented environmental disaster in the region.
The private companies responsible for the salvage operation concluded that the conditions for conducting the towing operation were not met and that it was not safe to proceed. Private companies are now exploring alternatives.
EUNAVFOR ASPIDES remains focused on its original mandate, acting as a trusted EU maritime security provider, aiming to contribute to the free navigation of merchant ships in its area of operation.
