Sounds of Jingle Bells: Christmas music at the municipal high school for girls

In keeping with the break bell, one or the other classroom door at the girls’ high school in Essen-Borbeck flies open and the pupils slowly pour into the schoolyard. But many remain interested in the courtyard. School girls from the eighth grade have already unpacked their instruments under the roofed break hall and you can hear the sounds of jingle bells. The listeners quietly listen to the Christmas music.

Essen-Borbeck. As on this Thursday, on the next two Thursdays in Advent, small concerts for the school community will take place in the school yard during the major breaks, to get in the mood for the Christmas season.
“Since the Christmas concert in the usual form at the MGB has to be canceled this year and the orchestra, string orchestra and school band are not allowed to rehearse because they are multi-year groups, the music department has come up with a new concept,” explains music teacher Dorothee Wember about the campaign. Music-making students from all grades were able to contact the music teachers in advance and so, in addition to the guitar group of Charlotte Steinsiek and the string classes, small class ensembles were founded under the direction of Mieke Weinrich. In the last few weeks they have been rehearsing hard at school and at home for their performances on Thursdays. In addition to the newly founded ensembles, the guitar group and the 6-string class, soloists will also present their skills with classical music and Christmas carols. The performances are filmed so that relatives of the performers do not miss the performance. The videos can then be found in the digital advent calendar of the MGB. It’s worth taking a look at www.mgb-essen.lms.schulon.org.
