The SoundCloud music streaming platform is said to be set to roll out a new payment system that allows users to directly pay the artists they listen to. If the information is true, it would make SoundCloud the first music streaming service to adopt such a compensation model. So far, the service pays the artists who are present there on a pro rata basis, like the majority of platforms of the same genre. All the income generated by subscriptions is thus pooled and then redistributed to the artists (via their record company) according to their number of listenings, a system much more advantageous for the “big” artists than for the artists. less known.
With this direct payment system, SoundCloud would go one step further in favor of independent artists. Last year, the site launched Repost, its service specializing in marketing and distribution for independent artists and which gives musicians all the tools to monetize, promote and distribute their music on other streaming services such as Spotify or Apple Music.
