Soul singer Macy Gray pleads for new American flag | Celebrities

CelebritiesThe current flag of the United States has been around since 1959, but according to Macy Gray (53) it is time for a new design. The soul singers suggest in an opinion piece for Market Watch that the American ‘Stars and Stripes’ needs a new design.

According to Gray, known for the number 1 hit ‘I Try’, the current flag can be compared to that of the Confederate States. The 53-year-old calls that flag “ragged, dated, divided and incorrect”, just like the current tricolor. “It no longer represents democracy and freedom. It doesn’t represent all of us anymore. It’s not fair to be forced to honor him, it’s time for a new flag.”

The white stripes represent purity and innocence, but Gray can’t relate to that anymore. “America is great, it’s beautiful. It is not pure, it is broken and in pieces.” The singer therefore believes that the stripes should not be bright white, but broken white.

Stars

The number of stars and their color is also a point of criticism. Gray also believes that Washington DC and Puerto Rico, which have been lobbying for years to become a US state, should also be added as stars on the flag. That should bring the total number of stars to 52, according to her.

Furthermore, the bright white stars should be given a new color, says Gray. “What if the stars were the color of all of us? Your skin color and mine. The blue square represents vigilance and persistence; and the red stripes represent bravery. America is all those things.”
