On Wednesday 30 March, the Côtes du Lot Wines Syndicate organized the 12e IGP Lot Wines competition at the Quercy Périgord hotel school in Souillac.
It was in the brasserie area of the application restaurant that four tasting tables had been very nicely set up by second-year classes (Bac pro) under the watchful eye of their teachers.
40 jurors – 36 samples presented
Nearly 40 jurors were expected by the President of the Syndicate, Patrick Girard, and the headmaster of the Lycée hôtelier, Ms.me Dubuf. Among them producers, oenologists, informed consumers, members of the union and the chamber of agriculture, two teachers including Xavier Tamboise for the hotel school in Souillac, eleven students from the professional agricultural school in the territories of Montat and a student from the hotel school: Julien Laïb, finalist of the 36th trophy for the best sommelier of the south-west regions and team winner of the same trophy in the Cadet category which took place in March 2022 at the Hôtel de Région.
36 samples were presented in the competition, distributed as follows: 1 table for the 2021 reds and the 2020 reds (the competition could not take place last year due to the health context), 1 table for the dry whites , 1 table for dry rosés and finally, 1 table for semi-dry and sweet rosés.
Each juror had scoring grids to assess the appearance, the nose (intensity and quality) and the mouth (intensity and quality as well). Obviously all the samples were masked and numbered. The contest really started around 10:30 a.m. and ended a little before noon.
The winners are:
– Rouge 2021 : Gold medal: Tradition by the winegrowers of Haut-Quercy (Glanes) – Silver medal: Eugénie la Jolie by the SCEA Château Eugénie (Albas),
– Red 2020: Gold medal: Cauq’licot by the GAEC de Cauquelle (Saint-Paul),
– Dry rosé 2021 : Gold medal: Le Gravis Rosé Sec Malbec by the SCEA Le Gravis (Vire-sur-Lot) – Silver medal: L’Amadour Rosé by the SCEA les Vignerons de Rocamadour – Silver medal: Invitation by the EARL The Grauzils (Prayssac),

– Silver medal : The original by the GAEC de Cauquelle (Saint-Paul).
It is obviously in a very good atmosphere that the results were announced by the President of a syndicate which has about 120 non-cooperating producers. The competition was open to Lot wines and not only to Côtes du Lot.
This was followed by a gourmet meal (the menu of which we will not reveal, so as not to make you salivate unnecessarily) prepared and served by the students in an atmosphere that is still just as nice, with however a perceptible concern about the cold snap. and frost announced for the weekend. The last season was tough.
The next competition organized by the union will take place on friday 8 avril in Caillac with the 2022 edition of Rosé au Féminin
Special mention to M.me Myriam Fages, responsible, among other things, for the organization of the competition which was hailed by the professionals present for her forthcoming retirement after 25 years in the service of this union which she has accompanied since its creation in 1997.
For the hotel school, it was a great opportunity to show its know-how in terms of hospitality and organization; It had been a long time since a wine competition had been organized there. Congratulations to the union for having thought of them, and mission accomplished once again with elegance, for this fifty-year-old high school whose application restaurant should be remembered.
