Moscow. The painting by the Italian painter Sandro Botticelli (1451-1510) The Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus enthronedwhich dates back to the 15th century, will be put up for sale by one of the world’s largest auction houses, Sotheby’s, where it will be on public view for the first time in 120 years, The Times newspaper reported.
“Although many previously believed that The Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus enthroned (…) it was only the work of the artist’s workshop, new investigations revealed that it is a very early work by the master himself. The painting will be put up for sale at Sotheby’s auction with a lot value of up to three million pounds sterling, or about $3.88 million at the current exchange rate, the media reported.
According to the newspaper, the painting in question is related to the altarpiece Altar of Saint Ambrosecreated by Botticelli around 1470 and preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in the Italian city of Florence.
In the 19th century, the work was kept in the Florentine monastery of San Giuliano, and in 1904 it was sold to the British art collector and Baroness Harriet Loyd-Lindsay, after which it passed into the hands of her family.
“The Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus enthroned was delivered two years ago to the Sotheby’s auction house, after which researchers were able to establish that it is the work of Botticelli himself and that it was painted around 1470,” the newspaper detailed.
The newspaper added that the auction will take place next week.
