SOS Mediterranee, a symbolic SOS on the monuments of Rome

(ANSA) – ROME, 03 OCTOBER – On the occasion of the Day of Remembrance and Reception, the humanitarian organization SOS Mediterranee launches a symbolic SOS projected on the facades of buildings and monuments in Rome, from the Colosseum to the Pyramid of Cestius, “a message for change point of view and go beyond propaganda” “It’s time to change our gaze – they say in a note – on the silent massacre in the central Mediterranean, in the Libyan detention centers, in the Tunisian desert. It’s time to overturn the perspective of a propaganda that has contributed to producing thousands of deaths, of misinformation and fake news that fuel hatred and indifference and to look in depth at the reality of things. The pounding sound of the SOS pierces the night of Rome, the morse code of the emergency It has appeared on dozens of buildings and monuments.” On October 3, 2013, a boat capsized a few hundred meters from Lampedusa, putting an end to the lives of 368 people. “Since then, also due to an extremely distorted account of reality, little has changed: people continue to die in the Mediterranean. Our sea is the deadliest migratory route in the world. From 2016 to today, SOS Mediterranee has saved over 40,000 lives But it’s not enough. Day after day, thousands of people risk their lives at sea, and more and more often those who are supposed to save lives choose to ignore the SOS or, worse, actively hinder those involved in the rescue.” The organization recalled that NGOs operating in the Mediterranean “act with humanity and in compliance with international law, to save lives that would otherwise be lost” and this is why SOS Mediterranee Italy is launching the “Change point of view” campaign. In addition to visuals which, through an optical illusion, propose a change of perspective, the campaign invites citizens to take action, to sign an appeal to show support for shipwrecked people and those who fight every day to save human lives.
