Sorry Yes, PS5 Cannot Play PS3 to PS1 Games

Jakarta

After announcing the price PlayStation 5, Sony ensuring that the new generation console will be able to play 99% of PS4 games. But it looks like PS5 compatibility is only limited to that.

PS5 later cannot be used to play PS3 games, let alone PS2 and PS1. In an interview with Famitsu, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said the PS5 development team did not have enough time to make this console compatible with Sony’s legacy systems.

“We remember the specific technique for the PS5, when we produced the device. In the midst of that, PS4 already has 100 million players; we think they want to play PS4 games on PS5, so we include compatibility with PS4,” said Ryan, as quoted detikINET from Gamespot, Friday (18/9/2020).

“While implementing that, we also focused our efforts on the use of a high-speed SSD and the new DualSense controller at the same time. So, unfortunately, we couldn’t achieve such a compatibility implementation,” he continued.

There is one reason why PS5 supports PS4 games. According to PlayStation Lead System Architect Mark Cerny, the two consoles are built with a similar structure, so that PS4 games can be played on the PS5.

Fortunately, Sony has already announced that PS5 will support the PS Now service. This feature allows gamers to play PS3 and PS2 games with a streaming method.

The Japanese company also announced the PlayStation Plus Collection which will launch with the launch of the PS5. This collection will contain tons of classic PS4 games including God of War, The Last of Us Remastered, Bloodborne and many more.
