The Soros-Kyrgyzstan Foundation (a foreign NGO recognized as undesirable in the Russian Federation) announced the suspension of its activities in Kyrgyzstan. Sputnik Kyrgyzstan reports this.
According to the group, the reason was to adopt a new law on non-profit organizations. As the fund receives funding from abroad, this leaves it subject to legal restrictions.
The group has been working in the republic since 1993.
According to an unnamed high-ranking official from Kyrgyzstan’s presidential administration, cited by the group, the team and many activists had known for a long time about the impending closure of the fund.
“Therefore, the link is in the rationale for the decision [о закрытии] to those recently adopted by the Jogorku Kenesh (parliament – approx. EADaily) [в закон об НКО] received with disbelief in the president’s administration,” – he said.
