KOMPAS.com – Sore throat is one of the many potential symptoms of COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms that develop with COVID-19 can vary between individuals.
A survey study published in February 2021 noted that, compared to other symptoms, sore throat including COVID-19 symptoms the earlier ones.
This makes sense because in other respiratory illnesses, such as the common cold, a sore throat is often the first symptom.
Viruses that cause respiratory problems are inhaled, meaning they enter the nose and throat first.

The virus may self-replicate as soon as it is inhaled and cause sore throat and irritation.
Sore throat due to COVID-19
Reports from Healthline, reports on how common a sore throat is as a symptom of COVID-19 show mixed results.
For example, a study of 120 people with COVID-19 found that sore throats were reported by 30 percent of study participants.
Another study of 99 people found that sore throat symptoms were only reported in 5 percent of cases.
A study in China, commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) and published early in the pandemic, found that out of about 55,000 confirmed cases, only 13.9 percent of people reported a sore throat.

This is in line with the findings of a systematic review and meta-analysis published in November 2020.
Researchers analyzed 148 studies that looked at symptoms in 24,410 adults with confirmed COVID-19.
From the analysis it was found that the prevalence of sore throat was 12 percent.
What is the difference between a sore throat and a symptom of COVID-19?
It’s not clear whether a sore throat from COVID-19 feels any different from a sore throat from other causes.
In general, a sore throat is a common symptom of several other ailments, including colds and strep throat.

If you have a sore throat due to COVID-19, the common symptoms of a sore throat may include:
- Pain or tightness in the throat, especially when swallowing or speaking
- Dry or itchy feeling in the throat
- Redness or inflammation at the back of the throat
Ultimately, the only way to know for sure if your sore throat is due to COVID-19 is to get tested.
