Sore Throat, Omicron Symptom or Not? Here’s the Difference

Jakarta

The Omicron variant is known to have mild symptoms. Scientists say Omicron’s symptoms are more like those of the common cold. However, a sore throat can also be a sign to watch out for.

However, sore throat is not always associated with COVID-19 symptoms. It can also be a symptom of other common respiratory conditions. In addition, not everyone who is exposed to COVID-19 will experience a sore throat.

People who contracted the Omicron strain of SARS-CoV-2 appear to have very high rates of sore throats and colds. As of January 2022, scientists are still studying these symptoms, but some early journal articles suggest that the symptoms were indeed present in the case of Omicron.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sore throat is a symptom of COVID-19 to watch out for. However, they explain that cold and flu symptoms are the most common Omicron symptoms, so a sore throat doesn’t necessarily indicate that someone has the disease.

For that, it is necessary to do a COVID-19 test to determine whether a person is really exposed or just a common sore throat.

How severe is the sore throat from Omicron’s COVID-19?

Sore throat from COVID-19 Omicron can vary in severity. It can feel like an irritated throat with a prickly or burning sensation. Some people also experience pain when swallowing.

According to the ZOE study, a sore throat due to Omicron’s COVID-19 can feel like:

  • Dry throat, not sore
  • Itch
  • Painful on the first day but better on the fifth day
  • Like inflamed or enlarged tonsils

Apart from a respiratory infection or sore throat, there are several other symptoms of COVID-19 Omicron that you also need to watch out for. More on the following page.
