Sør-East 110 Urges Public Not to Call Emergency Number for Cold-Related Issues

Sør-East 110 writes on X that they receive many inquiries in connection with the cold. Now they are asking people not to call the emergency number unless there is an emergency or emergency.

– We receive many inquiries on the emergency number 110 regarding water that has frozen, electricity that has gone out or firewood that needs to be carried, writes the fire service and continues:

– We must advise the public to look for relevant telephone numbers in their area and contact them themselves.

– Can stretch us a little further

Marthin Haugen, duty manager at Sør-East 110, tells Dagbladet that they have had around 25 inquiries about cold-related problems between 07.00 and 10.30 on Saturday.

– The vast majority lack water because it’s frozen, some lack electricity, and some think it’s cold and don’t have firewood available – so they ask if we can come and carry firewood, says Haugen.

When people call the emergency number, the fire service assesses whether the caller is able to handle the situation themselves.

– If there are older people who we understand are not capable of solving the problem themselves, then we can stretch a little further, says Haugen.

– Takes off the capacity

This has led to local, municipal fire services being persistent, for example.

– But all the inquiries which may not be so urgent that they should have been called in, take away the capacity for more serious emergencies. That is the reason why we published the message. It is important that people read the situation and make an initial effort themselves. That will help us, says the duty manager.

So far, it hasn’t caused them any major problems, except that it takes away capacity.

– But as people wake up and see that they lack water or electricity, inquiries may increase. We want to be at the forefront, so that people do not make contact until they find themselves in a precarious situation.

The inquiries have also increased towards the weekend, which Haugen puts in the context of more people being at home and the fact that it has become colder.
