Tems
Singer-songwriter Tems (whose real name is Temilade Openiyi) had a lot to celebrate at the 2023 Oscars, as she was nominated as co-writer of Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which was nominated for the Best Original Song The 27-year-old appeared in a stunning white dress by Lever Couture with delicate tulle fabric that formed a striking silhouette around her, but as she took her seat in the audience, the striking look became a visual obstruction.
When she was spotted sitting in the crowd, the look quickly went viral online as people criticized the dress’s contoured hood that blocked the view of those behind her. Some simply called it “rude,” others pointed the finger at the stylist, and a viral tweet from Jarrett Bellini said, “Imagine waiting your whole life to be at the Oscars and you end up sitting behind a stratus cloud.” On the other hand, some argued that Tems was “taking up space as a black woman” and shared photos of Lady Gaga’s large headpiece at the 2009 Grammys, wondering why no one criticized her in the same way.

Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner caused quite a stir when she showed up to the Schiaparelli show during Paris Fashion Week on Jan. 23 wearing a strapless black velvet dress with an eerily lifelike lion’s head — a look from the new collection set to debut on the runway shortly after. In her Instagram post, Jenner clarified that it was a “fake art creation made by hand using man-made materials,” but viewers were not happy with the disturbing images, fake or not, and criticized them for once again glorifying “wildlife accessories.”
Critics who were waiting for a statement from PETA were bitterly disappointed, however, as the animal rights organization described the animal heads as “fabulously innovative.” In a statement released by Page Six In a statement released on , PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said the “looks celebrate the beauty of wild animals and could be a statement against trophy hunting, where lions and wolves are torn apart to satisfy human selfishness.” She added, “We encourage everyone to stick to 100% cruelty-free designs that showcase human ingenuity and prevent animal suffering,” and further urged Jenner to “expand that creativity to exclude sheep that are sheared bloody for wool and silkworms that are boiled alive in their cocoons.”

And “Ye” West
Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, wore a black T-shirt with the words “White Lives Matter” on the back while presenting his “Yeezy Season 9” collection at a surprise show at Paris Fashion Week on October 3, 2022. The choice of T-shirt was obviously controversial, and many people online were upset that the rapper and designer so casually (and without explanation) used the racist phrase, which has been adopted by neo-Nazi groups and white supremacists, as well as Trump supporters, in response to the “Black Lives Matter” movement, Billboard reports.
Ye has expressed varying thoughts on racism in America throughout his career. He’s now come a long way from his 2005 remark that George Bush “doesn’t care about black people,” as well as his 2018 appearance on TMZ Live, when he referred to slavery as a “choice” and wore a MAGA hat to visit Donald Trump. Controversial conservative Candace Owens joined Ye at his show in a matching “White Lives Matter” shirt.
