The former Sophienspital in Vienna’s new building is to become an “urban center”. The aim is to create subsidized housing, bars, shops and public green spaces. The focus is on a community building with 46 apartments.

A total of over 200 apartments are now to be built on the former hospital area. In addition to the community apartments, around 160 subsidized apartments are also planned. “The new municipal housing will now not only offer a larger range of apartments, but also a spacious multi-purpose hall and a modern garage for more than 100 bicycles,” said Councilor for Housing Kathrin Gaal (SPÖ) in a broadcast.
Medical practice in the former hospital
Thanks to a photovoltaic system and a green facade, the residential building should also be climate-friendly. On the green roof there is also a communal garden with seating and raised beds. A 700 square meter multi-purpose room is being created on the ground floor, which will also accommodate a doctor’s practice. Sports should also be possible in the room.
According to the city, the 120-year-old administration building of the Sophienspital, which is a listed building, is particularly challenging. The building will be preserved just like the trees. The city announces that the green space will even be expanded. All apartments are equipped with open spaces. There is also an interim use in the Sophienspital until construction begins.
No elementary school
What does not come, however, is the originally planned all-day primary school. The district chairman of Neubau, Markus Reiter (Greens), criticized this sharply in June. With the end of the school, the city is giving away a “chance of the century”. Instead, more community housing is now being built. The total construction costs for the project amount to nine million euros, the City of Vienna is funding the construction with 3.75 million euros. Construction is expected to start at the end of next year and completion is planned for the end of 2024.
