Soon “tobacco-free spaces” in Côte-d’Or

Smoking will soon be banned in about twenty places in Cote-d’Or. It is an initiative of the League against cancer in the department, which has been approaching the municipalities for weeks to install “tobacco-free spaces”. This system has already existed for nearly 10 years in other departments, such as the Alpes Maritimes. Concretely, these spaces will be materialized by markings on the ground and explanatory panels to deter smokers – and protect those who do not smoke, such as children. The goal is not to punish oneself, but to “denormalize” the cigarette, to introduce into the customs that smoking is harmful.

A progressive schedule

These tobacco-free spaces will see the light of day (in alphabetical order) in Chenôve, Chevigny-Saint-Sauveur, Couchey, Dijon, Fontaine-lès-Dijon, Gevrey-Chambertin, Longvic and Talant. “These spaces will be labeled” tobacco-free “without restriction of dates or times”, specifies the League against cancer. For some municipalities, such as Couchey and Gevrey-Chambertin, the inauguration of these places should take place during the month of June 2021, in July for Talant. For Dijon, on the other hand, no date has been set, the tracks are still being studied.

“In France, each year, the number of tobacco-related deaths is estimated at 75,000, including 45,000 from cancer”, recalls the League against cancer. A useful reminder, on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Monday, May 31, 2021.
