Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia PT Pertamina (Persero) revealed that the completion of the Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) project in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan can be achieved next year, so that trials can be carried out (commissioning) operational.

Pertamina’s SVP Strategy & Investment Daniel S. Purba said, most of the Balikpapan RDMP project will be completed in 2023, so that it can start trials and operate in 2024.

“This year we are focusing on completing the Balikpapan Refinery. Part of the Balikpapan Refinery will be completed this year. I think from that target we can commissioning in 2024,” he said in Jakarta, quoted Monday (27/02/2023).

Please note, the Balikpapan RDMP project is an expansion project of the Balikpapan oil refinery which is currently operating. If the Balikpapan RDMP is completed, this will be the largest oil refinery in the country. This is because, after the project is completed, the capacity of the Balikpapan Refinery will exceed that of the Cilacap Refinery, the refinery with the largest capacity at present.

Currently the Cilacap refinery processes 345 thousand barrels of oil per day (bpd). Meanwhile, the Balikpapan Refinery will be able to process 360 thousand bpd of crude oil, an increase from the current Balikpapan Refinery capacity of 260 thousand bpd.

From the crude oil processing capacity, this refinery will produce 319 thousand barrels of fuel oil (BBM) per day, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) products and also petrochemicals such as propylene which is a plastic raw material.

In addition to increasing the capacity of oil refineries, the project worth US$ 7.2 billion or around IDR 108 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 15,000 per US$) will also improve the quality of fuel to Euro 5 standards.

Some of the products produced, among others, diesel fuel. Pertamax, Pertalite, Pertadex, and Avtur. All fuel products will comply with Euro 5 standards with sulfur below 10 ppm.

The total installed capacity of Pertamina’s oil refinery is currently 1 million barrels per day (bpd).
