Soon also Twitter boss: the idiosyncratic and demanding Elon Musk

A colony on Mars, combating climate change with electric cars, repairing brain damage by implanting a chip: too many ambitions for one human life, you might say. But that’s not the case with Elon Musk.

This week, a new challenge was added: changing Twitter. The board of the online platform is agreed with Musk’s $44 billion takeover proposal. The arrival of the visionary but controversial businessman is already causing unrest among Twitter employees.

Raised by books

Musk grows up in South Africa. The first eight years of his life he sees his parents little. “I was raised by books,” he says in 2017 to Rolling Stone magazine† When he was ten he went to live with his father. In retrospect a bad plan, he says himself: “He was such a bad person, you have no idea.”

At school he was bullied for years, being the youngest and smallest in the class. Only after a growth spurt, around the age of sixteen, Musk can defend himself. At the age of seventeen he leaves South Africa for Canada, where his mother comes from. He then goes to study in the United States and founded a software company with his brother.
