As part of its goals to fight global warming, the administration of President Joe Biden intends to launch the construction of a huge wind farm off the states of New York and New Jersey, the media reported on Wednesday.

In this context, the US government will launch in February the auction of areas off the coasts of these two states for the implementation of this project which will supply electricity to up to 2 million houses, specify the same sources. .

Named “New York/New Jersey Bight”, this project alone could generate 7 GW, according to a press release from the Department of the Interior.

The project was mentioned by the Biden administration at the time of the presentation in March 2021 of its strategy for the development of this form of energy in the country, with the objective of achieving the production of 30 gigawatts (GW) of energy. wind turbine by 2030.

The Bight is a triangular area whose point is located south of New York Bay and which extends along the coast of New Jersey to the west and that of the island of Long Island to the east. .

The US administration plans to hold an auction of six lots totaling nearly 2,000 square kilometers (480,000 acres) on February 23 for interested companies, the largest area ever offered for such a project in the world. country, according to the media.
