The municipality has chosen to honor the memory of the “muse of Saint-Germain-des-Prés” in the artistic and intellectual district of the post-war Parisian period of which it symbolized “the free and bohemian spirit”, recalls the Parisian executive in its deliberation project.

Part of the Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés, in the center of Paris, will take the name of Juliette Gréco, the icon of French song who died in September 2020, after a vote to this effect by the Council of Paris this Tuesday.

The City of Paris has chosen to honor the memory of the “muse of Saint-Germain-des-Prés” in the artistic and intellectual district of the post-war Parisian period of which it symbolized “the free and bohemian spirit”, recalls the Parisian executive in its deliberation project. This is where she lived and frequented, among others, Jacques Prévert, Raymond Queneau, Boris Vian and Jean-Paul Sartre.

More than 60 years of career

The corner of the square named after her is located just in front of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés church where her funeral took place, and not far from the Montparnasse cemetery where she was buried.

Juliette Gréco died on September 23, 2020 in her house in Ramatuelle (Var) after more than 60 years of a career where she interpreted the greatest, from Vian to Prévert, via Aznavour and Gainsbourg.

As for the Quai Jacques-Chirac in April, the Paris Council has departed from the rule which provides that the name of a personality can not be attributed to a public road in the capital until five years at the earliest after his death.
