Sony’s PlayStation Portal: An Overview and Release Date Revealed

Sony has finally officially revealed its PlayStation Portal portable console
Apart from streaming games from the PS5 over a direct Wi-Fi connection, it can’t do much
With a price of around 5 thousand crowns, it targets a very narrow group of users

The Japanese company Sony was one of the traditional manufacturers of handheld consoles, but in the long run it was unable to compete with the successful Nintendo and its DS console. But the popularity of the Nintendo Switch device, which can be used not only as a traditional console, but also as a travel device, forced Sony to reconsider its decision. Cloud streaming by Microsoft or Nvidia also played a role in this, which, if you have fast internet, allows you to play full-fledged titles on the go.

PlayStation Portal can’t do much for now

Sony decided to compensate for this handicap with a handheld called Portal, previously known under the code name Project Q. Although the Japanese company officially refers to the device as a handheld, in fact it is not a portable console in the true sense of the word – it is only intended for streaming games from a full-fledged console PlayStation 5. Ty allows you to play via Wi-Fi on an 8″ LCD panel in a resolution of up to 1080p at 60 frames per second.

“PlayStation Portal connects directly to your PS5 console via Wi-Fi, allowing you to continue playing seamlessly,” said Hidejaki Nishino, Vice President at Sony Interactive Entertainment. PlayStation Portal can run any PS5 game, using both Dual Sense controllers and controls on the sides of the device, which resemble Sony’s controller layout, while also featuring adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. You’ll also be able to play other audiovisual content on PlayStation Portal, so you’re not limited to just games.

Don’t overlook

The main disadvantage of the device is the fact that it must be connected to your console via Wi-Fi at all times. So once you get a little further away from your PlayStation 5, the “portable console” is suddenly useless. Unfortunately, there was no word about the possible streaming of games from the cloud, which could make the device significantly more attractive. If even this handicap did not deter you, you will have to prepare the amount of 200 dollars (approx. 5,300 CZK with VAT). Sony has not announced when we will see PlayStation Portal, but it is speculated to be at the end of this year.
