It was tough for everyone during the pandemic, and both Microsoft and Sony had trouble supplying enough consoles to eager buyers. This led to a lot of scalping and other problems, but Christmas 2023 will be completely different, and in an interview with Barron’s says Eric Lempel, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, that expectations are very high:
“We’ve had consoles a little bit here and there over the last three holidays, but this is the first time we’ve had a full supply, and we’re happy about that. We launched the consoles in 2020, and it took us a while, as for everyone else in the world, to make up for what was lost due to the shortage of some of the components that came out of COVID, but now we’re happy that anyone who wants a PlayStation 5 can get their hands on a…
We have a very good outlook for PlayStation 5. We expect one of the strongest seasons in our history in terms of console sales. It’s a combination of the great product we have and the titles that have been released since launch – and most recently with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.”
He also talked about the fact that Sony increased the prices of PlayStation Plus over the summer, which they received a lot of criticism for as it is quite expensive as it is right now. But Lempel explains that Sony “haven’t touched PlayStation Plus prices for 85% of the world in years”, adding that many other subscriptions have also increased their prices recently (we assume he’s specifically talking about movie streaming). He also adds:
“We want to make PlayStation Plus something big. After we started anew last year and introduced the tier system, many consumers have realized that PlayStation 5 has great value.”
Finally, Lempel was also asked to compare PlayStation Plus with Game Pass, which includes many titles from day one:
“It depends on what you get in the service in terms of the type of games and the quality of the games. I can’t comment on what the competition is doing. But with us we feel we offer a great curated catalog of games, in addition to other features and services with PlayStation Plus.”
Which do you prefer between PlayStation Plus and Game Pass – and why?
