Sony’s Increased Game Development Budget and Focus on Games-Services: What it Means for Microsoft’s Competitors

Microsoft’s competitors are on the alert. It seems that Sony does not back down from plans and significantly increases the budget for the creation of games.

The Nikkei editors received data that in the current financial year, i.e. Until March 31, 2024, Sony will spend 300 billion yen (about $2.13 billion) on game development.

The reporters note that the budget for “game research and development” has increased from 271.1 billion yen in the previous 12 months. The comparison is even more impressive if we recall the 144.5 billion yen allocated to this segment in fiscal 2020.

But gamers should hardly count on dozens of new story-driven games from PlayStation studios. Sony wants to focus on games-services. It is predicted that this segment will reach $19 billion by 2026.

By March 31, 2026, the company intends to release up to 12 games-services, which in the current financial year will require up to 55% of the budget to create products that expand the direction.

Augmented reality remains an important topic – nine PlayStation studios and Japanese companies will work on AR. Sony management has repeatedly stressed that it will continue to focus on single-player games.
