Sony Xperia 5 III review: Compact and attractive top model

If you are familiar with the Xperia line, you should not be surprised by the design of the device. This smartphone is offered as a more compact version of the Xperia 1 III, which does not bother us. Measuring 157 x 68 x 8.2 mm and weighing 168 grams, it easily fits in a pocket and is quickly forgotten.

The Japanese company has yet to get rid of the boundaries, even if this is improving because the screen takes up about 82% of the front. The device is also covered with Gorilla Glass 6 on the front and back. It also benefits from IP68 certification (submersion up to 1.50 meters for 30 minutes), but it replaces the matte coating of its older brother for a glossy finish that unfortunately picks up a lot of fingerprints.

Sony decided to keep the fingerprint reader on the edge, which makes it a lot of fun to use. We also appreciate the ability to insert a microSD card into one of the dual SIM slots. As icing on the cake, the user is entitled to a physical driver and a 3.5 mm jack port, which has become a rarity in this price range. Don’t worry about the future knowing that this model is compatible with 5G, NFC, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.

My voice

The 3.5mm jack port on the top edge is of good quality. It offers enough power (120mV) and can take advantage of most current headphones. The distortion is minimal (0.0007%), the dynamic range reproduction is excellent (111 dB) and the interference is under control (-76 dB). Together with his older brother, he is one of the best players in the field.

The smartphone has convincing stereo speakers, in line with previous speakers in the range. When placed at the front, it delivers a balanced and relatively powerful sound that takes advantage of the screen’s 21:9 Cinemascope aspect ratio. So viewing content is especially fun in landscape mode.
