Sony Worried About Microsoft’s Purchase of Activision-Blizzard and the Future of Playstation

Internal documents show that Sony believes Microsoft can use “Call of Duty” to shake up the market for both game consoles and game services.

Sony is worried that competitor Microsoft’s purchase of the huge game publisher Activision Blizzard will cause Xbox to overtake Playstation in the gaming industry. This shows internal documents leaked in connection with game developer Insomniac Games, which is part of Playstation Studios, suffered a data breach, reports Eurogamer.

The documents show that Sony believes Microsoft could use the wildly popular “Call of Duty” game series to shake up both the game console and game service markets and pose a “massive threat to Playstation Plus.” In addition to “Call of Duty”, Microsoft’s purchase means that the company now also owns major game series such as “Candy Crush”, “World of Warcraft”, “Diablo” and “Overwatch”.

Sony has previously argued that Microsoft should not be allowed to buy Activision-Blizzard because the deal could be anti-competitive. Microsoft’s purchase of Activision-Blizzard for 68.7 billion dollars, corresponding to almost 700 billion kroner, was nevertheless completed on October 13 after a 20-month review process by authorities in the United States and Great Britain.
