Sony unveils new Playstation Plus – so will the Game Pass challenger

It’s hot in the gaming world. Microsoft is investing heavily in the hyperflexible subscription service Xbox Game Pass and is buying game studios on the right and left to sweeten the offer. Playstation has so far taken a more modest approach and has not thrown itself as unconditionally into subscription services for games. We have therefore been waiting to find out more about how Sony thinks towards Game Pass.

And today came the setback; Sony announces that Playstation Plus will be completely redone this summer. Among other things, the streaming service Playstation Now is now being baked into the offer, which will consist of three different levels.

Playstation Plus Essential is more or less Playstation Plus as we know it today. This includes two downloadable games a month, discounts, support for cloud saving and online games. The price remains at the same level as today, where you pay SEK 52 a month with an annual subscription.

Playstation Plus Extra throws at 400 Playstation 4 and 5 games, both own Sony products and those from third-party studios. The European price lands at 13.99, which can be translated to approximately SEK 144 a month.

Playstation Plus Premium increases game totals to 740 with the help of streamed games from Playstation 1, 2 and 3 as well as PSP. In the markets where Playstation Now is available, Plus subscribers can stream to the PS4, PS5 and PC platforms. It should also include some kind of preview of the game for those who want to try them a little quickly before buying. The monthly price lands at 16.99 euros, or just over 175 kronor.

When the new Playstation Plus is released in a couple of months, games like Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11 and Returnal will be included in the line-up for those who bet on Extra or Premium. With this, Playstation Now will also cease to exist as a standalone service.

The roll-out will take place in stages. The Asian market will first take part in the new Playstation Plus, followed by North America, Europe and other countries where the service is available today. Sony aims for all countries to be covered by the offer to have access during the “first half of 2022.”
