“Sony Slows Down Plans for The Last of Us Multiplayer – Bloomberg Reports”

Sony is cracking down on plans to launch more multiplayer titles in the coming years. Big problems are to be expected multiplayer action from the world of The Last of Uswhich explains why we haven’t seen the project recently PlayStation Showcase.

The information is provided by renowned journalist Jason Schreier from Bloomberg. Four sources familiar with the title told him that work has slowed significantly, the team has shrunk, and Naughty Dog management is reassessing the quality of multiplayer and its prospects for profitability.

These steps were to occur after studio Bungie questioned The Last of Us’ multiplayer and expressed concern that the project would be able to engage players in the long term. According to reports, the creators of Destiny, which Sony ditched last year, are supposed to oversee and review all live service titles.

As a result, he should have been team at Naughty Dog reduced to a small group. The rest of the developers were supposed to move on to other projects within this well-known studio. Naughty Dog itself even responded to Bloomberg’s report on Twitter:

“We’re incredibly proud of the work our studio has done so far, but as development continued, we realized it was best for the game to give it more time.” explains and de facto confirms information from sources.

Naughty Dog also confirms the development of other projects, including a new single player experience. “We look forward to sharing more information soon,” they deliver. The Last of Us Part 3, a “remake” of The Last of Us Part 2, and an entirely new brand were previously speculated to be in development.

Let’s recall that originally The Last of Us multiplayer was planned as part of The Last of Us Part 2. But in 2019, the studio decided to separate it from the single-player adventure. Then there was confirmation in 2021 that online was in development and last year we were promised more information in 2023. So we’ll see what we end up getting. But it’s more than likely that those plans changed with Bungie’s intervention.

Earlier there was talk of ambitions to offer stories in multiplayer like in single player. Everything was supposed to take place in a different part of the world and bring different characters from number one and number two.

If you want to know more about Sony’s live service games, a PvPvE heist event was presented at the PlayStation Showcase Fairgames by Jade Raymond, Concord from former Call of Duty developers and Marathon from Bungie.

Hermen Huls, head of PlayStation Studios, said during a presentation a few days ago that they have 12 live service games in development.
