Sony sells Mandalorian-style LED screens for movie sets

Sony wants to sell the screens to professional film and video makers, reports the company. These are modular screens, where different panels can be connected to each other in all kinds of configurations. The screens use Sony’s Crystal LED technology: in fact, it is microled, an alternative to OLED.

There are two series: the C series with very high contrast and the B series with very high brightness up to 1800 Nits. In comparison, smartphone screens remain below 1000 Nits. The B series has been developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment and created to meet the demands of movie production. These screens have an anti-reflective coating and a matte finish.

Known from The Mandalorian

The screens will be available from next summer for an as yet unknown price. The screens are intended for building virtual sets. The creators of Star Wars series The Mandalorian pioneered such a screen, which they call ‘The Volume’.

Large parts of the series were shot within a huge screen that ran completely around the set. The ceiling of The Volume also consists of screens.

Benefits

The use of screens instead of the well-known blue and green screens has a number of advantages. In this way, actors, cameramen and directors can immediately see what the digital environment will look like.

The light also looks more natural, because the screens directly cast light on the actors in the right color and from the right angle. That was with The Mandalorian important, because the main character is wearing a reflective suit.
