Sony has significantly increased the prices of its games in seven countries to Steam. Players from Argentina, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Japan and South Korea will have to dig deeper into their pockets, for example when buying the PC versions of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Days Gone, God of War or Returnal.
Some gamers write that it’s a shame because it’s hard to buy games in low-income countries. They fear that other companies will not follow Sony. Sony itself has not announced the higher prices and has not yet commented.
From available information from local players and SteamDB, price increases vary by country and title. For example in Canada, four games were auctioned off for $10, representing a 14.5 to 17% increase depending on their original price. In Japan, game prices increased by approximately 29 to 35.2%. Argentina seems to have been the most affected. Here is the price of God of War for the week more than doubled from 4,199 pesos to 8,499 pesos. Prices for Sackboy A Big Adventure and Returnal have even increased by 67%.
