Sony publishes a list of games that are not backwards compatible with PlayStation 5

Sony states that one of the main advantages of PlayStation 5 is that the console will be compatible with the “overwhelming majority” of titles from PlayStation 4. According to estimates, this number includes over 4,000 games, but not all items will be able to run without problems on the next-generation console. Sony has released a support document for the PlayStation 5 detailing how backward compatibility will work on PS5. While the manufacturer states that most PS4 games will run on the new system, some may generate “errors or unexpected behavior”. Also, even with games that work, some features available on the PlayStation 4 may not work on the PS5. Sony, however, did not go into details.

Sony has published a support document stating that over 4,000 PS4 titles will perform better or worse on PS5, but there are some very problematic ones.

Titles that run without problems will benefit from “Game Boost” on PS5. Games running with the Boost feature turned on “may” offer higher and smoother FPS. Game Boost is not something new, because during the time of PS2 backward compatibility, users were able to tweak previous generation titles to run smoother and load faster on PS2, but this feature was eventually removed. Controller compatibility is also discussed. PlayStation 5 will support DualShock 4 and officially licensed third-party controllers. However, older pads will not work with games designed for PS5. Sony also says that while the new DualSense will work with PS4 titles, it’s better to use the DS4 in that case. “For best results, use the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller when playing PS4 games and PS VR games on the PS5 console,” writes Sony. “PS5 games are not compatible with the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller.”

According to a document published by Sony, only a few games will be unplayable on PS5. The manufacturer has not published a list of titles that do not cause problems, or titles with a few errors. However, we do have a list of items that won’t run on PS5, including:

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe’s Diner
