Last week’s big FTC/Microsoft leak gave us a lot of information about Microsoft’s future plans.But there are also some clips from other companies, asIt will resetAs noted, this includes Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan’s comments about PlayStation Home.
PlayStation Home is the same virtual world as Second Life, which launched as a beta in 2008. Today, we might call it the Metaverse, but it never gained a large audience and eventually closed in 2015. When talking to the FTC about Metaverse and PS VR2, Ryan said PlayStation Home was ahead of its time,“possible”10-15 years ahead, adding:
“We have a couple of ongoing projects that are very exciting to us in terms of creating metaverses of certain game types that may work with other parts of Sony. Sony’s entertainment properties have a strong presence in the metaverse space. Great potential.
While Metaverse hype has waned over the past few years, with Meta/Facebook (the ones most invested in the idea) seemingly halting most of their efforts, it seems like we could still get some from Sony if those plans are still viable The love of the metaverse. Whether this ultimately means something like PlayStation Home is getting a reboot in VR remains to be seen.
