Sony PlayStation 5 Slim Console: Detachable Drive & Affordable Pricing Revealed in Lawsuit

The PlayStation 5 Slim console could have a detachable drive
The price should be very similar to the current PS5 digital edition
We’re also due to see the PlayStation Project Q portable console this year

The lawsuit between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission regarding the acquisition of Activision revealed other interesting information. Microsoft’s internal documents revealed that we should see a smaller and cheaper Sony PlayStation 5 Slim later this year. The price should start at the same amount as the digital edition of PS5 is currently sold, which is 10,990 CZK on the Czech market.

The PlayStation 5 Slim may have a detachable drive

Last year, the Insider Gaming server already published speculations about the upcoming variant of the PlayStation 5 with a detachable mechanism. Basically, the new PlayStation 5 console is to be sold without mechanics, which may indicate that it will be a Slim variant. There should also be a special package in which the attachable mechanism will already be included. That way, people would be able to choose according to their preferences, and the Japanese company would save by producing only one variant of the console. The price of the mechanism itself has not been revealed, but the classic version of the PlayStation 5 with the mechanism is about 2,400 CZK more expensive. It can thus be expected that the detachable mechanism can be sold at a similar price level.

Microsoft’s document also mentions Sony’s new portable console, which is designed to stream gaming over Wi-Fi from the PlayStation 5, and was officially unveiled to the world in May under the code name Project Q. According to Microsoft, it will retail for less than $300, which converted without VAT means CZK 6,500.

Of course, these are still only estimates from a competing company. Sony did not comment on pricing or release date estimates. If this is accurate information, it will not be the first interesting leak related to this lawsuit. A few days ago, for example, Sony accidentally published the development costs of some of its big games like The Last of Us 2 or Horizon Forbidden West in documents. The first named game cost 220 million dollars, which is roughly 4.8 billion crowns, and the sequel Horizon then cost 212 million dollars, or roughly 4.6 billion crowns.
