Regarding the compact devices:

I have also been an absolute fan of Sony for years, especially because of the compact devices (used a Z1 compact myself for 4 years and an XZ1 compact for 1.5 years).

The XZ1-compact unfortunately started to show signs of failure, and at the beginning of this year I replaced it with the Xperia 5. Reluctantly, because it is no longer so compact and unfortunately nowadays, just like Samsung, also with a screen that has a visible stroboscope effect at lower brightnesses (PWM on too low frequency).

Yet I have become more nuanced compared to. my requirement that a device must be compact. I definitely experience it as a disadvantage that I can no longer operate this device with 1 hand (do often use the double tap on the home button to artificially reduce the screen). And the device is also quite a placard to carry in my pocket. On the other hand, I do notice that I sometimes absolutely love that I now have a bit more screen surface to work on.

Regarding the camera: I also notice that cameras from the competitors in the high-end segment are a lot better than those from Sony. I already noticed that in the time of the Z1 compact, but even nowadays. On the other hand, this also requires some nuance: Yes, certainly in terms of “point and shoot” the direct competitors are running around Sony. And the camera app on my Xperia 5 is sometimes excruciatingly slow. So it certainly happens every now and then that I miss ‘spontaneous’ shots.

Still, I don’t think the camera is bad at all: Especially in situations where I can take a little more time, my Xperia 5 can also take really nice pictures, even in low light.

Anyway, even now with the lack of compact devices, I still remain a fan of Sony. The UI itself is very ‘clean’, except for some bloatware between the apps. And although the screen has unfortunately also suffered from PWM strobing these days, it is still a lot less bad than with Samsung and LG. 120 Hz may be an upgrade, because although the refresh rate does not necessarily have to coincide with a higher PWM frequency to influence the brightness, I sometimes see that people also choose to PWM at a somewhat higher frequency. Hopefully this will be the case with the Xperia 5 II.
