Sony offers a preview of the new virtual reality PS5 controller

TOKYO – Sony has reached VR enthusiasts with a new PlayStation 5 controller which the company says gives gamers an enhanced tactile sensation.

“When you walk through the rocky desert or exchange blows in hand-to-hand combat, you will feel the difference, amplifying the incredible visual and audio experience so essential to virtual reality,” wrote Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of planning and management of arm platforms. Sony Interactive Entertainment games, in a blog post Thursday.

Virtual reality is an area where Sony faces increasing competition as other technology groups step up their own research and development. Accessories are also important in bringing gamers to the latest consoles in the PlayStation series.

The new controller combines Sony’s DualSense technology, which is used in standard PS5 controllers, with a haptic feedback system that lets gamers experience game action with their hands.

The ball design allows players to “hold the controller naturally, while playing with a high degree of freedom,” Nishino wrote in his blog post.

The Japanese conglomerate also revealed that the controller will be equipped with an adaptive trigger that adds “palpable tension” when pressed.

Development of a new VR headset for the PS5 was announced in February. Sony is yet to reveal a release date, but aims to provide “a dramatic leap in performance and interactivity.”

Sony isn’t alone in targeting gamers with new VR hardware.

Facebook launched the Oculus Quest 2 headset in October, while Apple reportedly worked on its own.

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC announced a partnership with National Dong Hwa University at a VR talent cultivation center in eastern Taiwan last year.

Developers are expected to receive a new VR controller prototype from Sony soon.

The new VR system will replace its PlayStation VR which was launched in 2016. Sales of the current model have reached more than 5 million units by the end of 2019.

Sony promises a single cable connection with its new product.
