Sony lays off 90 PlayStation division employees in internal reorganization

A Sony laid off 90 employees from its US offices over the past week. The vacancies cut were all from the division responsible for PlayStation and indicate a change in the Japanese giant’s sales strategy.

According to journalist Stephen Totilo, from Axios, the 90 laid off worked in sales and marketing. That is, layoffs should not affect the studios game developers. Sony claimed to those laid off that the move is part of a “global transformation”.

Among the roles of those laid off were positions as a sales representative – people who go from store to store convincing retailers to sell more PlayStation products – as well as some positions directly linked to marketing.

According to Totilo, one of the speculations about the “global transformation” cited by Sony is that the company will put less emphasis on selling physical products, adopting initiatives of direct sales to players, especially through digital platforms.

Currently, the company is looking for employees to act as sellers of subscription services. Over the past week, Sony has unveiled the new version of PlayStation Plus, which will now also offer access to hundreds of games, a bit along the lines of what Microsoft already does with Game Pass for Xbox and PC.

Sony has not commented on the layoffs, according to Axios.
