Sony Layoffs: 900 Employees Cut as PlayStation Unit Struggles Post-Pandemic

Jakarta

Japanese company Sony laid off 900 employees at its PlayStation unit and closed a studio in London. This policy was taken when the gaming industry was struggling to recover after the pandemic.

These layoffs will impact 8% of the division’s staff in the Americas to Asia region. This policy was taken a few days after Sony cut its annual sales projections for the PlayStation5 console.

“We have concluded that difficult decisions are inevitable,” said Sony’s Head of Games, Jim Ryan ReutersWednesday (28/2/2024).

The steps taken by Sony are in line with companies such as Microsoft and Tencent’s Riot Games which have cut thousands of employees in recent months. This happened because of the slow recovery of the gaming market.

According to reports Newzoo, the global video game market only grew 0.6% last year to US$ 184 billion. However, that figure is better than 2022 which fell by more than 5%.

These layoffs will also impact other Sony studios, including Insomniac Games based in the United States (US), which works on games such as Marvel Spider Man 2 and Naughty Dog, the studio behind The Last of Us.

Earlier this month, Sony said it expects a gradual decline in PlayStation5 unit sales starting next fiscal year and does not plan to release any major franchise titles in the next fiscal year.
