Nearly two years after the release of those that remain best wireless noise canceling headphones on the market, Sony launches its successors, the new WH-1000XM5. Unlike the 1000XM4, these feature significant changes, both in terms of design, structure, components and performance.
They no longer allow the rod to be folded, which makes them more complicated to transport while traveling, but on the other hand, the simplification of the structure has reduced weight, making them, in turn, more comfortable to use for long periods of use. A soft synthetic leather is used, the remaining elements are recycled plastic from car parts. Even the packaging itself has abandoned plastics, using various types of recycled and sustainable materials.

This design change allowed the introduction of improvements in the structure, such as the incorporation of a total of eight microphones (four of them of the type beamforming), which in turn are controlled by a dual Sony HD QN1 processor, to ensure not only more effective noise cancellation, but also, through the new Precise Voice Pickup technology algorithms, to filter your voice from all external noise. during a phone call.
To reinforce the high performance of the active noise canceling system, Sony has created a new type of speaker, 30 mm, that allows to cancel, more effectively, noise with medium to higher frequencies. To ensure that the sound reproduction quality is not inferior to that of the WH-1000XM4’s speakers (which were 40 mm), Sony used a carbon fiber dome, which is reinforced on the side with a polyurethane layer.

Through this solution, Sony guarantees to be able to reproduce frequencies between 4 Hz and 40 kHz, a frequency that reduces to 20 Hz to 40 kHz when using wireless communication, via Bluetooth. When used with the supplied (1.2m) cable, they provide a sensitivity of 102 dB (at 1 kHz) with headphones on (using Sony V1 processor), or 100 dB (1 kHz) with headphones off.
In terms of battery, Sony kept 30h of autonomy, with the noise cancellation system active, but when turned off, the maximum autonomy value rises to 40h. By incorporating a fast charging system, it is possible to fully charge the battery in 3h30m, with just 3 minutes of charging to guarantee 3 hours of music playback.
