Video calling has become one of the big trends of 2020, but Webcams built into laptops haven’t been up to the task. To promote better image quality, digital camera manufacturers have launched tools to use them as cameras for video calls. Canon first launched its application for Windows 10, and now Sony has followed with Imaging Edge Webcam.
The bad news is that, despite the delay in launching the service in the current context, Sony has also not announced that the application has support for Linux or macOS., despite the fact that Apple’s system is widely used by photographers and video editors who use their cameras.

The good news from Sony’s announcement has been display an extensive list of cameras that support the wake-up feature like webcams, which we can see in the image above. In addition, in the list we will see models with some years behind them, such as the Sony A5100, from 2014.
To download and install the application, all you have to do is select here the model of our camera, if it is in the list, and click on “Download”. Having tried multiple models, it seems to download the same executable.

Also, Sony gives specific instructions for use for the different models, requiring the use of the USB cable for our camera to appear in Windows. and can display the image in real time. They warn that for the audio we will have to use an external microphone or that of the PC, since the camera does not pick it up. The maximum resolution that will be transmitted is 1024 x 576, and they will only work with Windows 10 64 Bit.
